Stories of the Cats

Elvis - the kitten who fell out of the ceiling

Elvis A house in one of the neighborhoods where we routinely rescue feral and lost cats had suffered a devastating fire, and was left uninhabited for many months. Needless to say, the local cats were less particular in their choice of domicile, and many of them made it their home. In particular, one enterprising mother cat had climbed into the ceiling through a hole in the sheetrock, and had a litter of kittens in the seclusion and safety it offered. Although mom was following her instincts, she didn't think of one unfortunate possibility.

Because the house had become a home for so many lost cats, we had obtained permission to enter the premises in our rescue work. One day, we went into the living room, and found a little grey kitten staggaring around on the floor. Evidently, he had fallen out of the ceiling - how long ago, we weren't sure. He had not eaten in no one knows how long, was sick, and stagerred around blindly, with both eyes crusted over with infections. We had little trouble catching the poor creature, and, because he was so sick, we brought him to our home for special care. As you can imagine, bringing him home, rather than to the foster house, meant that we would inevitably become attached.

Elvis and ElizabethHappily, his eyes cleared up, he began eating, and has grown into a big, healthy, affectionate boy we named Elvis. He has, of course, stayed with us, and become part of our own little colony of people and cats. Here is Elvis, cuddled up with Elizabeth, another rescue we have adopted:
