Stories of the Cats

Summer 2009 Fundraiser

We held our Summer 2009 Fundraiser on August 29, and it was a successful and joyous celebration of our work and the community that has made it possible!

The Woodmark at Uptown graciously gave us the use of their community room and patio for the afternoon, and the comfortable atmosphere of the room, and the beautiful summer afternoon were the perfect beginning of a lovely afternoon of friendship, food, art, and music. We owe a debt to Carol, Maxine, and to the rest of the management, staff, and residents of the Woodmark for making this possible.

One thing that made the event especially memorable was the contribution of two artists. Glenwood Blount, a longtime friend of our family, is a fine watercolorist. In addition to contributing a number of pieces to our silent auction, he set up his easel at the event, and painted a portrait of a cat staring longingly at a window. Watching a creative artist at work is a wonderful experience, and Glenwood quickly found himself surrounded by an audience who were amazed at his ability to turn water, paper, and pigment into something of beauty.
The other artist who made this so memorable was Bobby Dee. Bobby is a marvelous pianist who learned his skills on the East Coast during the Big Band Era. He has a deep knowledge of what has been called the Great American Songbook: the work of composers like George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, Richard Rogers, Johnny Mercer, and others who defined American popular music. His playing draws on styles from stride to modern jazz, and he filled the room with joy and style.
Thanks to the generosity of many of the businesses and individuals who donated items, we were able to offer a terrific silent auction with cat toys, artwork, coupons for dinner at a number of restaurants, jewelry, books, and many other exciting items. We also thank the generosity of the attendees who bid enthusiastically on all the items. silent auction

No charity event would be possible without the volunteers whose tireless efforts make it possible. The three Fabulous ladies to the right were there through the planning and execution of the event, and their energy and good cheer were amazing: Jess, Merry, and Janet. Volunteers who escaped the camera, but whose efforts are equally appreciated included Morgan, Kiff, Pauline, Margo, and Earnest. Thank you to you all!
Finally, for those of you who were unable to join us, Pauline captured a video of Glenwood painting while Bill (another of our vollunteers who followed Bobby in providing music) played guitar in the background. Enjoy!
