Fabulous Felines Thanks Sandia Labs’ ANGLE

Sandia Labs’ ANGLE (Advancing the Next Generation of Leadership Excellence) supports Albuquerque’s Animal Rescue groups through its annual Homeward Bound Drive. Their successful event this spring collected 800 pounds of dog food and 130 pounds of cat food as well as other supplies, and the group generously shared a portion of their donations with Fabulous Felines. Our kitties received wet and dry food, litter, and the ever-handy puppy pads. We wish to express our gratitude for their kind support. It was heart-warming to see the members’ enthusiasm and friendliness in collecting and distributing the supplies.

Bushea Wins Olympic Gold!

We are proud to announce that Bushea has won the Olympic Gold Medal in her signature event, the turbo toy competition. It has been a difficult year for the determined feline, seeing the games postponed due to Covid, even though Covid infections are rare in cats. But with the help of her coach, Mimosa, and all her supporters at Fabulous Felines, she did make it to the Olympics, and earned a Gold Medal!

We are delighted to share a video of Bushea winning her Gold, courtesy of Ana, ace volunteer and Cat Olympic Correspondent!

Wild Love Winner

We are delighted to announce the winner of Wild Love 2021. Caryl and her new rescue kitty have won the drawing, and will receive the Wild Love gift package.

As we’ve said before, this is always a bittersweet announcement for us, since we wish all of our supporters could win. We do want to thank all of you for making our work possible. This includes managing the community cat colony under Project Apollo; operating the foster house to care for the cats that we trapped as part of our TNR (Trap Neuter Return) efforts, but could not return because they were old, infirm, or too tame to go back into the wild; and continuing our education and outreach efforts.

So, thank you all for your continuing support, and may you stay healthy as we move past the pandemic and slowly return to normalcy.

Two Extraordinary Cat Rescues

As we are emerging from the COVID pandemic, I find myself longing for some good news. Recently, I found it in two stories of people who risked their lives to rescue endangered cats; two stories of people who—like our own volunteers—demonstrate the fundamental goodness and compassion toward ALL living things that lives in the human heart.

First Petty Officer Wichit Pukdeelon with rescue cat. Reuters via Washington Post

The first involves a daring rescue of four cats from a burning, sinking ship by Thai naval personnel. The Thai ship had approached a sinking fishing vessel to check for oil spills. Although the human crew had been previously rescued, they saw four cats trapped on board. Even though the vessel was on fire, the crew risked their own lives to save the four cats. You can read more about this heroic rescue in the Washington Post article.

The second story tells of Sakae Kato’s work in rescuing cats in the contaminated quarantine zone of the Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster. Sakae stayed behind to rescue cats who were abandoned when people fled the radiation clouds released when the Fukushima nuclear plant was damaged by a tsunami. He plans to remain in this dangerous, abandoned region as long as there are animals in need of rescue. Read more about his heroic efforts in this article from Reuters, and visit this photo essay from The Guardian.

For our furry Valentines, a $25 gift card to Pet Vet Market.

And thanks to the extraordinary generosity of one of our long-time supporters: A rare piece of vintage, art-deco Lalique Crystal. This is a discontinued style, but it has never been used, and is still in the original packaging! It would make a wonderful candy dish, or ring bowl. Prices for used items of this style this range $100 to $499 on the Internet.
